π We'll be hosting our first Speak Easy Society Event at Local Sound Collaborative on Tuesday, October 6th, 7-9pm.
A HUGE thanks to Ray and his team over at LSC, who said yes without hesitation and want to support this event. This is an incredible example of how curiosity, community, and connecting will open doors for you.
A little background: I went to one of the first open mics that LSC ever hosted about a year and a half ago. Having recently moved back from Chicago to Rochester, I was DEEPLY struggling to reconnect to this city like I had connected to Chicago for the 7 years I lived there.
See, when I was living in Chicago, I had so many pockets of community I would tap into. I had:
- Wonderful, empathic co-workers who cared about teaching children as much as I did

- Fellow rock climbing enthusiasts who made an effort to top rope in the indoor climbing gyms at least twice a week with me
β
- Caring humans I volunteered with on Sundays with a non-profit for the homeless in Chicago
β
- A traveling community of couchsurfers that relied on me to host events for locals and travelers all around the city about once a month
β
- My local "watering hole" that I could walk to and catch up with the bar manager, Zack, then go check out live music (and later, host an open mic there)

- My improv buddies from Second City, some of who turned into camping and karaoke pals
When a series of events led me back to Rochester, I didn't realize how much I needed community. I knew it was important, but I didn't realize that my entire support system was made up of several communities of people I created deep connections with.
Eventually, I discovered Rochester Women's Network and Bossy ROC, where I have made friends, gained clients (who later became friends lol) β and I started to piece together those communal parts of my life that I was missing so much after moving back to Rochester.
But I still missed that creative spark β the one that the musician in me was looking for. When a Google search led me to Local Sound Collaborative and I saw they were starting music open mics, I went!
And so began a monthly tradition of showing up and sharing my original songs with a new crowd... and finding another new community. π
Local Sound Collaborative is more than a space for open mics, though β it's a non-profit that supports local music through grant programs for local musicians, provides music programs in underserved communities, and hosts live shows. They're good people. Can't wait for you to become more familiar with the work they do.
When I told Ray about the Speak Easy Society event, he immediately said yes β "because we love you and want to support you and love what you're all about."

I'm telling you, community and connection is what this life is all about. And you know! You get it! Because here you are, on this list... eager to share your story so you can connect with others, too. π€
I'm still working on creating an EventBrite for this so I can keep track of how many people are coming. That's coming soon, so keep your eye out for that.
